Ben Affleck will not return as the Dark Knight in the upcoming DC film The Batman, which is set for release in summer 2021.
Warner Bros.’ announced the release dates for the upcoming movies on January 30, 2019, Wednesday. The solo superhero movie, ‘The Batman’, directed by Matt Reeves, is dated to arrive on June 25, 2021. Meanwhile,‘The Suicide Squad’ sequel directed by James Gunn will hit the screens on Aug 6, 2021.
Affleck was originally supposed to co-write, direct and star in the Batman solo film but later stepped down from directing in 2017. A script had already been written by that point, though when Matt Reeves was brought on board to direct the movie they essentially started from scratch, deciding that the Affleck treatment would no longer be used.
On January 30, 2019, Affleck tweeted that he was “excited for #TheBatman in Summer 2021,” and to see Reeves’ “vision come to life.” His tweet included a link to a Deadline Hollywood story indicating that he would “pass the torch” to a new actor.

DC Fans were really excited when Affleck debuted in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Many were celebrating the portrayal as one of the high points of the film. Followed that he appeared in a cameo performance in Suicide Squad, and then appeared next in Justice League. However the failure of the Justice League at the box office put an obstacle on the Justice League sequel.
Warner Bros. also said Wednesday that its new take on Roald Dahl’s The Witches, starring Anne Hathaway and directed by Robert Zemeckis, will hit theaters Oct. 16, 2020, and that its untitled event film on May 21, 2021, is now titled “DC Super Pets”.
And the studio’s The Shining sequel, “Doctor Sleep” (based on the Stephen King book), has moved up to Nov. 8, 2019, from Jan. 24, 2020.
